A letter to our sponsors and visitors

Prof. David Serrano

Dear Sponsor,
For the past 101 years, The University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez has been cultivating the Hispanic scientists and engineers of our bright tomorrow. These future professionals are raised to have the ability to identify and solve our society’s problems like the world’s energy challenge. In efforts of aiding this cause we allow students in our campus to develop the methods and technology needed to create new and renewable energy. A perfect example of these projects is known as UPRM’s Solar Engineering Research Racing Team (SERRT).

For the past 23 years SERRT UPRM has offered young students the chance to learn practical engineering skills that involve building, designing and driving a solar powered vehicle. A valuable aspect of our team is the giving back to our community by teaching high school students the important aspects of solar power energy and its potential of solving worldwide problems. Students learn project management skills, scientific intuition and the importance of giving back to society. This program sets the perfect environment to create a complete engineer in his professional and technical aspect in which this nation needs.

The program was rebooted this year by a new group of students from the engineering faculty in which reviewing their equipment they noticed the decay and the noncurrent technology they depended on. For the safety of the drivers and to meet with the new standards in the competition they require new equipment and technology. SERRT will compete in fall of 2013 in the World Solar Challenge and in summer of 2014 in the North American Solar Challenge representing our university. They have made a sponsorship proposal that is in closed with this letter. I hope that you enjoy helping these young engineers in accomplishing their goals.

Sincerely

Dr. David Serrano
